The first man on Mars looks up at the stars
and he sees the earth hanging low on the horizon
As he germinates borrowed soil on an alien landscape
he begins to ruminate on his purpose and the meaning of his work.....
Just stay alive, he tells himself
As he glances up again, he begins to miss his family, his friends, his cats
He left them all behind when he decided to move far, far away
He doesn't regret this decision, though, as he ultimately feels that
the life he's living now is much more fulfilling
He will be remembered as the first, and he's doing more with his life by dying than he ever would have staying alive on earth. But, he thinks maybe if he'd gone further he wouldn't have a constant reminder of home hanging over him every night, making him question his purpose and the meaning of his life but as it is he'll just have to push through.
The last man on earth looks down at the dirt and he sees the death and slow decay of a world once full of life
The dirt is now gray and the people are all gone
The animals are so scarce he doesn't know how much longer he'll be able to even feed himself
With his stomach aching, his body sore and his mind slipping, he thinks of all the people he knew and how they're all gone and how he doesn't even know how long it's been since they all left
He begins to think dark thoughts as he questions his own stubbornness and the futility in the decision to keep living
But as his gaze strays upwards at the twinkling night sky he feels a sense of renewed hope
somewhere out there are all the people who left him behind and maybe one of them is coming back! Maybe they hadn't forgotten about him! But as the time passes his hope turns to disappointment, his disappointment turns to anger and as he looks up at those twinkling, immortal immovable pieces of shit in the sky he screams at them in desperation
